Cologne to Europoorte Ferry & Hull

On arrival in Cologne, I was parked in the hotel basement.  Most public car parks, such as in supermarkets generally mean you are close to other cars with the possibility of some irresponsible individual opening their car door onto your bodywork.  Not so if you park in three or four spaces of the fifty on each level in this car park.  I needn't have bothered.  The nearest car to me was seven spaces away, and didn't move whilst I was there.
A proper scratch-free parking space. LUUVVERLY.
Access into the city requires a green badge (or a 40 euro fine), but mine was paid for online and received in three days from Berlin.  Better than Royal Snail!!!!

My Green Badge - how long before Uk starts robbing us?????????
This is the Dom Cathedral.  In WW2 this magnificent building survived the bombing.  It is still black to remind all of the horror of war. A considerable part of Cologne was not so lucky, BUT..... the silver lining was that rebuilding provided a much better city layout.

Looking up
This is the Hohenzollern Bridge, viewed from the Hauptbahnhof, carrying six railway tracks across the Rhine.  During the day there is more chance of seeing trains crossing the bridge than not seeing any trains. During WW2 the bridge was blown up by the Germans as the allied troops approached Cologne. (Google "Hohenzollern Bridge", go to IMAGES and see the black and white photo's).

Hohenzollern Bridge, the main six track railway bridge over the Rhine
It is also now famous for its "Love Locks".  Padlocks (many engraved with names), are attached to the bridge by couples to confirm their undying love for each other.  Once locked, the relationship is forever.
It is an amazing sight.  The building in the background is Triangular and has a viewing area on the roof.

Some large, some smaller.......
After the bridge, the railway station.  Most large cities in Germany have a large expanse of glass at either end of the station canopy with some form of advertising.

Anyway, back on the road, out of Cologne, onto the A57, A52, and A61 to Venlo, over the border into the Netherlands, A67 toEindhoven, A58 to Breda, A16 to Dordrecht and A15 to Europoorte. Took a leisurely four hours with time to spare at the Ferry terminal.
Stopped for forty winks or was that......

Rest area???
Then on to the ferry port, and found a playmate...

A Netherlands relation
Then the ship, not Pride of Hull today, but....

Pride of Rotterdam
Ready for the ferry....

All Skoda's bar two.  P&O Fabia's.
Whilst loading onto the ferry found this huddle of Skoda's.  P&O have a fleet of them in Europoorte.
The tug arrived to shove us off...

Ready for the off....
Me on the car deck ready for Hull...

Nearly there
On the quayside at St George's Dock.

On my way home, not far now.
I will post boring stats of miles, fuel and tolls later this week.
NEXT STOP, WHO KNOWS, KEEP LOOKING.

Austria to Cologne

Took a couple of steps backwards to the Austrian border as I had missed a scenic part of the route.  You drive towards the border then.....

Just before the Italian/Austrian border at Resia,  I passed the Lake of the same name.  There were lots of people walking alongside the lake.  Not for me, diesel power is supreme.

Lake Resia

St Valentine a d Haude
On through the border to Nauders and Pfunds to Landeck.  In winter there are hundreds of ski slopes, although it is difficult to imagine snow, when the slopes I drive past are full of trees in full sun.
At Landeck I take the E60 through Landecker Tunnel (6955 metres), Perjentunnel (2880 metres), Gumauer Tunnel (355metres), Pianner Quadratscher Tunnel (1545 metres), Strenger Tunnel  (5851 metres), Flirscher Tunnel (1226 metres inc Gondebachtunnel), Pettneu (285), Malfonbachtunnel (370) Schnauer (270), the Arlberg Strassetunnel (13,976 metres – YES 14 kilometres), Langener tunnel (2323 metres),   All part of the Arlberg Schnellstrasse.  I am underground for over 36 kilometres.  I left one tunnel in sunshine and came out to a downpour and another toll.

After some daylight on the way to Feldkirch, I then joined a massive queue around the lake from Bregenz to Lindau,  It is like a holiday resort with ferries from Bregenz to Lindau.  The sat nav SOMETIMES IS A DIMWIT.  Another autobahn junction and I would have saved fifteen minutes.  However, I arrived at the resting place on SteigStrasse, about a mile from the island.  The island was full of tourists, no chance of a photoshoot here.

After a night in a quiet part of town it was another jetwash and onward again to Cologne via the A96 to Memmingen over bridges like this....

This was being towed by a 2CV pickup!!!!

the A7 to Ulm, Wurzburg and Frankfurt Airport where the Airport Hilton Hotel looks like an airship,

then onto the A3 and finally to Cologne.  It was along this section of the journey it was time to see just what Monty(that’s me) could do.  80, 90, 100, 110, 115, 120, 125 on the speedo. NOW WE’RE MOVING…………..  Two lanes, three lanes, open country, yeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaa. Bet I wasn’t doing 55 to the gallon then, more like 25. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Then on the aproach to Siebengebirge a quick DUMP......

Passing a dump........
Soon it was time to go into Cologne Centre.  I had my green badge to keep the Enviropolice at bay (another charge to prove your environmental credentials), I went straight to the car park, for a quiet nap so these got took..........

In Cologne, as much of Germany, the rivers are still major freight routes...
Freight going north (Rotterdam pehaps?)

80 containers - 80 lorries off the road - MORE TARMAC FOR ME

They take the car with them too......

Hotel Boats and day trip boats too...............
MORE COLOGNE TOMORROW.......

Monza to Lindau via STELVIO

Hi readers,
Apologies for no post yesterday.  The ISP at my hotel was just sooooooooooooooooo slow, I overheated waiting for the damned thing to load.  Anyway.......
Monza was a bit of a let-down.  The roads are the worst I have travelled on, some potholes almost came up to UK standards (dustbin-lid sized!!!!!!!!).  I'm on super low-profile wheels and they just aren't designed for crappy road surfaces. One crater was across the motorway (Autostrada my tailgate).

ANYWAY....
What a marvellous drive from Milan to Stelvio and on to Lindau.
Once out of Milan I was in my element.  The Autostrada to Lecco was at first quiet, then as the miles went by, more and more Italians were out for a Sunday blast.  Bikes and cars all ignoring the speed limit, so I had to join in.  The crash barrier is three sections high and judging from the damage the Italians don't mind giving it a bash once in a while.  After Lecco I drove 20 km through just ONE tunnel alongside Lake Como.  After that, more tunnels but the occasional sights of the Lake and some of the villages on the opposite shore were unbelievable.  Make no wonder those Italian guys are skint.  They must have spent zillions on concrete for bridges and dynamite for blasting the tunnels. One minute in relative darkness, the next in brilliant sunshine high above a valley.  Dual carriageway ALL THE WAY.  Mind you they make up for it with their Diesel and Petrol charges, PLUS the toll cost (it must all be higher than France and Germany by 10%).  But you have to keep an eye on the rear view mirror, some of those Italians are crackers.  They must have got their driving licences from a newsagent cos they can't drive.
After Colico the road to Stelvio is all single carriageway through towns built alongside the road. They even have a Skoda dealership in Talamona (just after Morbegno).

One of my Skoda nieces, a Citigo at Talamona
Well they built houses up the hills too, but about 65 miles to Bormio is 30/40/50 limits, everything revolves around the main road.  Including the churches, this one something to do with Madonna in Bormio...
Madonna church Bormio
The Italians ignore the speed limits, the bikers don't seem bothered either.  Every town has a Pizzeria cafe that is open, even though it is Sunday.  Some supermarkets open just in the morning. On the South facing side of the valley are vineyards, most with the name of the brand in four foot high letters, clearly showing for passing traffic.  I'm just whizzing along at 50mpg, BRILLIANT.
Then from Bormio it starts........
Climbing out of town around a few blind curves, then you realise you're going up.  A deep gorge stretches away to the left, you round a corner and don't see it anymore.  The valley drops away steeply on the left, you blink and water is cascading down the gorge, the road straightens, you see vehicles zig zagging up the valley high up in front of you...
WOW!!!!!!

I TOTALLY AGREE - WOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

AWESOME
then onto a series of covered sections where two vehicles cannot pass each other, there is a corner in the middle and someone HAS to reverse. I GOT THROUGH. Now the real test, short stretches of tarmac with reverse-turn BLIND corners, lunatic bikers blasting up behind and trying to pass. OH NO YOU DON'T, I got round first, then let them by.  Stopped at corner 22 and had a breather looking back down the pass.  DID I JUST DRIVE UP THERE, YES I DID.  You can see that this is no ordinary mountain pass with just the occasional mountain goat for company.  Bikers, Cars, Cyclists, LUNATICS and even CAMPER VANS.  I did a vid but it's not playing so,

Then on again, corner after corner, past the church with loads of Italians in traditional dress (not interested), and on finally to the top of the pass. Well turn one first......

I can't be in every picture

MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

But as we all know, what goes up, must come down even by an alternative route.

The other side - woweeee

It takes ALL sorts..........

Yes, they DO pedal up from the bottom - CORONARY
Couldn't get a shot down from the top, but managed this half way down.

Still Snow on the top in AUGUST

I was up there - those three white dots are CAMPERS - I'm OFF before them
Some dick stacked his bike part way down on a blind right hander (under a Skoda coincidentally), but all was under control with no injuries as I blasted past.
Then more miles, through Nauders to Landeck then west towards AUSTRIA the border,

Austrian border, going to Lindau.

via Bludenz and Feldkirch.
So far, all in generally glorious sunshine, and then it started to rain.  BUT HAMMER DOWN.
I might get the vid on tomorrow, but got to Lindau anyway.
BYEEEEEEEEEEE

MONACO This Morning, MONZA This Afternoon

Before I set off home I just had to visit the Casino and a few sights at Monaco.
In daytime this would involve hundreds of people, but at 0625 in the morning, well, you decide:

Outside the Casino

Oh yes I was

What a lovely surprise.

SUNRISE.

Then it was time for a quick car wash to make me look refreshed:

Nice and clean ready for Monza
I drove out through Menton and didn't realise how many bridges and viaducts I would cross.
This is the first one, and you have to go zig zag up the hill to get to it.......
Every one is a surprise of the engineering required to build these bridges.
Make no wonder Italy is SKINT though.

A7 over Menton
then off north-bound to Monza along the A7 to Genoa, and the A51 & A52 to Milano and Monza.
Overtook this one en route. French registered heading INTO Italy......

The kitchen sink MUST be under there somewhere!!!!!

It was pretty warm out there too!!!!!!!!
I wanted to go to Monza.  You can drive around the circuit just by arriving and paying 45 Euro.....
But not this week as the circuit is being resurfaced.  Had to make do with these instead....
